The new Horry County Solid Waste Authority (SWA) Material Recovery Facility (MRF), located near Conway, South Carolina, will be a 45,750 square foot warehouse and 3,818 square foot office building to process over 1,100 tons of material per month. The SWA collects unsorted and unseparated recyclable materials from regional municipalities including Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Conway, and Aynor. At the facility, the materials will be sorted by a state-of-the-art machine to separate the recyclable materials including glass, paper, plastic, aluminum, and steel. The SWA is seeking LEED Certification on this facility.
Cox and Dinkins, Inc. teamed with CDA Architects to design a high performance, energy efficient, environmentally friendly facility. The key feature of the site design is the use of 5 rain gardens and 2 detention ponds on the site to capture and improve stormwater quality. Through the use of rain gardens, vegetated swales and buffers, 67% of the first flush - the first inch of rainfall - of the development footprint, will be treated, captured or released by infiltration into the ground and to the detention ponds. The result is not only improved stormwater quality, but also a decrease in stormwater detention volume for a more environmentally friendly and sustainable site.
