The original Woodhill Mall was an out-of-date shopping mall with much of the space un-used and not leased for many years. The site's aged infrastructure was also considered a burden by City officials and the site could have continued to be another urban blight. That changed when the real estate and development giant Edens & Avant, Inc. chose Cox and Dinkins, Inc. to assist in a complete re-development. While the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) environmental certificatin criteria, LEED (TM) (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) was in it's infancy, the new Woodhill Mall was, nonetheless, designed with many sustainable elements including: a greater number of trees and landscaping to reduce the "heat-island" effect. The Sierra Club joined the City of Columbia in thanking Edens & Avant, Inc. and Cox and Dinkins, Inc. for turning an old and undesirable mall into one of the hottest retail properties in the area.
