Cox and Dinkins Awarded Final Design Contract for Shandon Neighborhood Drainage Project

August 10, 2020

We are excited to announce that the Columbia City Council approved our contract to complete final design and construction administration services for the Shandon Phase II Drainage Improvements Project. This contract includes the final stages of design on a project intended to help alleviate existing flooding problems in the Shandon neighborhood south of Devine Street and north of Rosewood Drive in Columbia, SC.

Cox and Dinkins completed preliminary civil engineering and land surveying services for prior phases of this project. In 2009 and 2010, Cox and Dinkins compiled a database of existing drainage structures in the watershed and performed an engineering analysis of the drainage system in this area. This analysis identified the potential flooding areas in the storm drainage system and proposed conceptual plans for improvements to these areas. As a follow-up to this phase of the project, Cox and Dinkins completed a more detailed analysis in 2014 to determine if conventional drainage system improvements could provide flooding relief for the Shandon neighborhood. Most recently, in May 2020, Cox and Dinkins completed additional drainage analysis and recommended improvements to the City of Columbia intended to alleviate the existing flooding problems.

The contract, approved by the City Council in July, includes final design of the recommended improvements and construction administration services for this project.

Cox and Dinkins is proud to be participating in the City of Columbia’s Mentor Protege Program as a part of this project, partnering with Palmetto Consulting Engineering Group (PCEG) as our protege.
